I came across a mention of The Dangerous Book for Boys (amazon.com) somewhere, thought I don't quite recall where. If the Lord chooses to bless us with a son,* then you can rest assured I'll be getting a copy of it. Here's the description:

The bestselling book for every boy from eight to eighty, covering essential boyhood skills such as building tree houses, learning how to fish, finding true north, and even answering the age old question of what the big deal with girls is.

In this digital age there is still a place for knots, skimming stones and stories of incredible courage. This book recaptures Sunday afternoons, stimulates curiosity, and makes for great father-son activities. The brothers Conn and Hal have put together a wonderful collection of all things that make being young or young at heart fun—building go-carts and electromagnets, identifying insects and spiders, and flying the world's best paper airplanes.

The link is to the US edition (amazon.com), which was just released. The UK edition was apparently a big-time best seller last year.

* For those wondering, Amy is about a week overdue; we're hoping and praying the baby comes quickly! We don't know the sex of the baby either, so my musing here may be fulfilled very, very soon. Of course if it's a girl, then point me to the requisite book(s) about tea parties, dollhouses, and all that other jazz!

I believe Al Mohler blogged about it yesterday. Justin Taylor mentioned it on his blog today.

Thanks for the link Rick! I know Ian and I are going to have a blast implementing the ideas in this book.
Can't wait to hear what surprise you're getting :)

Go, Amy, Go!!

Congratulations and Praise be to God for such a wonderful little blessing! I'll pray that all goes well with the birth. The book looks interesting and may help me recall some from my Boy Scout days.

Looks awesome, Rick. My brother and I spent a fair bit of time with the American Boy's Handy Book back in the day:

Its sketch for a simple iceboat inspired us to build some larger craft that achieved decent speed and hours of fun.

Here's a video of my dad, brother and I whooping it up on Christmas break a few years ago:

I'm abundantly blessed with girls, but that doesn't mean I won't teach em to play like boys. :-)

I'll keep praying that your delivery goes smoothly and soon!

I purchased this book two days ago, and it was as delightful as I hoped. A good mix of all the essentials 1 part History Book 1 part Almanac and 1 part Project Book. It was a blast to read and I can't wait to try some of the projects out.
