Update (2005-06-21): Eli comments. I should explain — I know (and knew) that there is more to an italic-style font than slanting.* As regards slanting, the title of my post was poorly worded. Perhaps it should have been "And you thought 'italic font' just meant 'slanted' ... " or something along those lines. For this, Mr. Evans, I offer my humble apologies.
