Translation

One of the first steps of this study is to work through the Greek text in an effort to get more familiar with the text.

Translation is a rather loose word to use in this context. What I've done is really more like a synthesis. I'm working my way through the Greek text, with English translations (primarily NASB and ESV) at hand to make sure I don't do anything really dumb. I also examine a number of words in Greek lexicons (primarily BDAG) and many times choose to go with BDAG's reading.

In addition, the UBS Translator's Handbook is also close at hand. This is incredibly helpful in understanding what the Greek text is trying to communicate. I don't always agree with it, but it is surely enlightening.

Finally: This is a work in progress. It is nowhere near complete or final. I will most likely be changing and re-evaluating many things when I actually progress through the text studying at the verse-by-verse level. This is especially true for some of the more controversial areas of the texts.

Note that some words (a few, not many) are italicized. These indicate words that I have supplied to help the context in English. Sometimes, the Greek is quite clear yet a literal English translation is lacking. The italic words are a bit of a judgement call, but where they are used I think things are a bit more clear than they would be otherwise.

Update: 2004-07-30: I've cleaned up the translation a bit. It's still rough in points, but it is serviceable.
