a hodge-podge of mish-mash … can you dig it?

I decided to rearrange things a little. This was a result of my deciding to tackle the insides of the deck and hull before worrying about patching the holes on the deck. First, I took the deck off of the form. Then I moved the form off to the side (that thing is heavy) so it would be out of the way. Then I flipped the deck. You know, the deck is really pretty light, and in moving it around I noticed that the center of gravity is right where it should be! That was good news.

The first thing I noticed was that the inside of this thing is ugly. Dried glue, resin that soaked/filled staple holes. It's a good thing nobody will really see the inside of this when I'm done. Here you can see the underside of the coaming, and the 1/4 inch or so that it 'hangs' over the recess. You can also see the fiberglass that I foolishly didn't trim whilst the stuff was still pliable. I now instantly recall that "glass" is one of the two words that make up the compound word "fiberglass" as I now have some cuts and scratches on my fingers from this stuff. I ended up cutting much of it, and planing (yep -- planing) the balance of it, down to the wood. I'd recommend that you take care of this early if you're building your own.

The interior back of the cockpit. Again, you can see some of the glue-schmutz I need to get rid of, and some of the overhang of the cockpit coaming.

Kind of a cool shot. This is the interior of the deck, looking down the nose of the boat.

This is the back end of the interior of the deck. Yeah, it is ugly. Hopefully it cleans up nice.

Here I've planed down part of the deck interior. Also, I've used a block plane to trim down the overhang of the coaming.

This is the interior of the nose.

This is after minimal sanding on the interior of the deck, plus the block plane work around the coaming. I used Nick Schade's suggestion of a soda bottle with sand paper wrapped around the outside. It seems to work fairly well to get at the concave regions of the inner deck.

And the nose, same status.

And the whole cockpit, from the inside. And, yes, in case you're wondering — I do fit in that hole.
