a hodge-podge of mish-mash … can you dig it?

We join our hero in a middle of a predicament today. How, pray tell, do we fit the very last strip into the tiny sliver of a hole left in order to complete this side?

After essentially whittling the last strip (which you can see below the hole) into shape with a block plane, glue is applied.

Then the strip is popped into the hole, and voila! The hole is filled. However, I need to apply some pressure to make sure that the strip is glued into the hole properly, filling the proper space. Staples aren't going to cut it on the thin strip. How do I do this?

Normally, I'd write a Perl script to help me out of such a jam. However, the kayak doesn't have a perl interpreter installed ... yet. So, I entered into hacky perl script writing mode and looked for a way out of this one. I ended up using some larger scraps (leftover strip ends), spring clamps, and some of the U-clamps I made earlier to fashion a method to apply pressure directly over that pesky last strip. He's goin' DOWN!

The hack-clamps are in place applying pressure to the proper location. It's a pretty cool solution, if I do say so myself. And, I now understand the saying which I've often read: You can never have too many clamps. I used 18 of them in no time just to do this. Glad I bought 2 dozen of 'em. Maybe I should get some more ...

Another view of the hack-clamps. You can see the setup on the bottom here.
