Today was the day we picked up the wood for the body of the kayak. I ended up selecting a bunch of Western Red Cedar for the main body of the kayak, and some Alaskan Yellow Cedar for some contrast on the deck. I'm not quite sure what I'll be doing on the deck yet, but I am sure I'll have plenty of wood. I'm also sure that it won't be too complex, unless I really build up my confidence when I start stripping the hull. This picture is of Jon's truck, as we took his truck to get the wood. He's building a kayak too, so half of the wood on the rack is for his boat. You can see Jon sitting in the driver's seat. This picture was taken at the ferry landing in Port Townsend, as we went to EdenSaw in Port Townsend to get the wood. They specialize in specialty woods for projects such as this kayak project. In other words, it's not your normal lumberyard. Where else will you find 20 foot planks of flat-grained Western Red Cedar in stock? They've also got a ton of exotic stuff in stock. Yellowheart? Basswood? Purpleheart? Redwood? They've got it all, and more. Highly recommended for your specialty wood needs.
