Kayak side view, from the bow. You can see the strongback (the long 2x4 in the middle of everything) in addition to the plywood forms. I used 2" wide chunks from a 1x6 for the cleats. The book said to just use scraps, but I didn't have any apart from plywood. An 8' 1x6 was under three dollars, and provided all of the cleats I needed. |

View from the stern, looking toward the bow. The clamps are simply holding a line I was using to make sure that the forms lined up along the centerline. The line on the right was also used to make sure things looked kosher. |

View from the bow, looking toward the stern. Note that the end forms have not yet been mounted, so if the end form looks a little crooked, it just might be. |

Side view, diagonal, from the bow. Pretty cool, huh? Note the bevelling on the end form, that was fun to do. A rasp made shredded cheese of the wood. Note also the shape of the strongback. It took some time to match up the strongback to the hole. I ended up cutting the strongback a little big with a jigsaw, and then used a rasp to take down just enough of the strongback so the end form would fit. Note that the end form isn't actually attached in this picture, I just slid it onto the strongback for the picture. |

A close-up of a form. Form 10 to be precise. A few things to note here. First, note the lines on the strongback. The line on the top of the strongback is a centerline. Note how the dotted line on the form lines up over the centerline. Also, note the line on the right side of the form and the line it matches up with on the strongback. This is an elevation line, drawn two inches down from the theoretical top of the strongback hole. See how the form is raised up off of the strongback? That's because while my strongback is basically straight horizontally, it is a little wavy vertically. This elevation line accounts for that and ensures that the boat itself (which is built around the forms, not necessarily the strongback) will be straight and true. |

This is a shot from the middle of the boat toward the stern. Note the centerlines and how they're lined up when compared to the reference line I've strung. Well ... if I would've had the camera in the right spot, you wouldn't even be able to see the dotted centerline that you see on form 10. Also note the "cockpit knock-off" on form 11. These are on forms 9, 10, and 11. When the time comes to cut the cockpit out from the deck, these will be removed. I cut them with a jigsaw and glued the piece back with a hot glue gun. |
