        <p>
      I currently live in <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&amp;q=Bellingham,+WA">Bellingham,
      Washington</a>, but I was born, grew up, and lived (until college) in <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=4520+Greenwood+Rd,+West+Branch,+MI&amp;spn=0.217285,0.247740&amp;hl=en">West
      Branch, Michigan</a>. This weekend I had the privilege of hosting some friends from
      West Branch who were traveling cross-county and back again.
   </p>
        <p>
      This couple has done a lot of traveling throughout the U.S., so it was not surprising
      when the conversation drifted towards regional dialects, sub-cultural differences,
      and the like.
   </p>
        <p>
      We also played a fun game of Scrabble(tm) in which I was able to (re-)use words with
      a 'q' in each of 3 successive turns!
   </p>
        <p>
      But back to the subject... the Michigan Accent. Yes, there is one. When I moved away
      from Michigan, I just assumed that the manner in which I spoke was 'normal'. Just
      like long, sandy beaches on enormous inland lakes is normal. Just like Vernors is
      normal. Just like a market paying you $0.10 for returning a pop can is normal. (Note: <a href="http://www.popvssoda.com/countystats/total-county.html">Michiganders
      say 'pop'</a> almost exclusively.)
   </p>
        <p>
      Here are a few pointers on how to spot someone from Michigan: <a href="http://www.freep.com/features/living/accent27_20000927.htm">Detroit

        <p>
      Manford Newman, one of my favorite people ever, died last night.
   </p>
        <p>
      My Mom sent the email that gave me the details. The subject was "Manford", and it
      hit me like a phone call in the middle of the night. I was crying before I opened
      the message.
   </p>
        <p>
      Manford had lived more than 80 years (maybe more than 90, I can't remember) and suffered
      from dementia towards the end. But when my siblings and I were growing up, he was
      our local grandfather. A Pseudo-grandfather, if you will (our living grandfather at
      the time lived 2.5 hrs away, and we saw him once or twice a year). He was funny and
      lots of fun.
   </p>
        <p>
      A couple of random thoughts:
   </p>
        <p>
      Our family went on a camping trip with the Newmans in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
      That's where I learned to play Skip-Bo and got most of my early camping exposure.
   </p>
        <p>
      Manford would come once a week and mow the church lawn, and I often (grudgingly) helped
      him. He'd do the big parts, and I would do the edging.
   </p>
        <p>
      One of the funny things he did was at picnics or dinner parties: after the food went
      around the table once, he'd pick up a dish and pass it again. Sometimes it would take
      awhile for everyone to catch on.
   </p>
        <p>
      Manford set up a huge model train scene in his attic. I always think about Manford
      whenever I see a book about trains or look at the Railroad Museum across the street
      from where I work.
   </p>
        <p>
      Manford is survived by his wife (my Pseudo-grandmother) Helen, numerous children,
      (real) grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

      The season mercifully ended over a week ago, but I have waited until now to post the
      results. Why? Because... um.. because.
   </p>
        <p>
      The season ended on a up note for the ol' Taco Lobos: a 3-game winning streak. Through
      the first nine games, the Taco Lobos were 1-8. Over the last 8, 6-2. Maybe the momentum
      will continue through next season? (Yes, I know what you're thinking... I'm not holding
      my breath, either.)

      The final standings:<br /><img src="http://www.supakoo.com/james/blog/content/binary/soaWeek17.jpg" border="0" /></p>
        <p>
      Check that out. I was the worst (or tied for worst) until week 15, and I finished
      7th out of 10. Dig it.

        <p>
      Note the winner: Daniel Foster and the Moetown Duffmen. Congrats, Dan!

      Can you say TWO WEEK WIN STREAK!

        <p>
      I can. The coolest part: it applies to me!
   </p>
        <p>
      Last week was pretty stinkin' cool: the Taco Lobos beat the best team in the league,
      The Overisel Flying Odonata. Special standout for the Taco Lobos: Bret Favre.
   </p>
        <p>
      Second verse, same as the first; except this time the Taco Lobos beat the second
      best team in the league, the Ingham County Kerux. Special standout this week: Julius
      Jones of the Dallas Cowboys (special shout out to the Colonel for urging my picking
      him up this week).
   </p>
        <p>
      Two weeks versus the top two teams, and I get two wins (and each time, my opponent
      was the second worst scorer for the week). Geez... I sure coulda used a
      few of those wins at the beginning of the season...

      Ugh. All is not well in Loboville. In fact, it's downright stinky.
   </p>
        <p>
      I'll spare you details (and, in so doing, spare <em>myself</em> the details, too),
      but since my first win 3 weeks ago, I haven't won since.
   </p>
        <p>
      This week I even was part of a 'blockbuster' trade with The Colonel of Cloverlawn
      Voyagers fame: Curtis Martin and Anquin Boldin for Joe Horn and Rudi Johnson. The
      trade didn't help either of us.
   </p>
        <p>
      I'm also over the righteous indignation. My total points scored in the last 3 weeks
      has been lame. I'm now the 8th highest scorer in the league. I guess my total score
      is slowly coming in line with my win/loss record.
   </p>
        <p>
      If you need me, I'll be at the bottom of the league standings, no matter how

        <p>
      Alert the media! Make sure you're sitting down! It's the Sign of the Apocalypse!
   </p>
        <p>
      The Taco Lobos have <strong>WON</strong>! They beat the Nonmaleficent Neophytes this
      weekend by a score of 150-95. The Lobos have the grand distinction of having scored
      the most points of any team this week. In terms of total points scored in all weeks,
      the Lobos are now third. In terms of win/loss record, the only stat that really counts,
      the Lobos are now (still) tenth (um... out of ten).
   </p>
        <p>
      There are two reasons the Lobos won: (1) all of the Lobos' players decided to score
      big points all in the same week; (2) the Lobos luckily caught the Neophytes on Peyton
      Manning's bye week and Priest Holmes on a downer week. Not much else to say, except
      that I like winning. ;)
   </p>
        <p>
      In other news around the league, the Moetown Duffmen lost their first game. This dropped
      that team from First to Second because the Flying Odonata have the edge in the tiebraker
      (total points scored in all weeks). The dagger to the heart is that the Duffmen's
      bench scored more than the starters. That's icky. The only solace is that most people
      in their right minds would probably have started the same players. Who would have
      expected Donald Driver to dramtically outscore Hines Ward? The Duffmen scored the
      fewest points this week. It's a bummer, Duff-dudes, but a loss had to happen
      sometime!
   </p>
        <p>
      Colonel Fauntleroy and his Cloverlawn Voyagers, after 3 wins to start the season,
      have now lost 3 straight. Come on down to the deep end, Colonel, the water's fine!
