Scrabble in the news

Polish your Protiles and memorize your two-letter words: there's a Scrabble(tm) tournament this weekend in Seattle.

Michigan Accent

I currently live in Bellingham, Washington, but I was born, grew up, and lived (until college) in West Branch, Michigan. This weekend I had the privilege of hosting some friends from West Branch who were traveling cross-county and back again.

This couple has done a lot of traveling throughout the U.S., so it was not surprising when the conversation drifted towards regional dialects, sub-cultural differences, and the like.

We also played a fun game of Scrabble(tm) in which I was able to (re-)use words with a 'q' in each of 3 successive turns!

But back to the subject... the Michigan Accent. Yes, there is one. When I moved away from Michigan, I just assumed that the manner in which I spoke was 'normal'. Just like long, sandy beaches on enormous inland lakes is normal. Just like Vernors is normal. Just like a market paying you $0.10 for returning a pop can is normal. (Note: Michiganders say 'pop' almost exclusively.)

Here are a few pointers on how to spot someone from Michigan: Detroit Free Press, Sep 27 2000; Detroit News, Feb 20, 2004; MichiganNative.com. Jeez-o-Peets!

Manford, RIP

Manford Newman, one of my favorite people ever, died last night.

My Mom sent the email that gave me the details. The subject was "Manford", and it hit me like a phone call in the middle of the night. I was crying before I opened the message.

Manford had lived more than 80 years (maybe more than 90, I can't remember) and suffered from dementia towards the end. But when my siblings and I were growing up, he was our local grandfather. A Pseudo-grandfather, if you will (our living grandfather at the time lived 2.5 hrs away, and we saw him once or twice a year). He was funny and lots of fun.

A couple of random thoughts:

Our family went on a camping trip with the Newmans in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. That's where I learned to play Skip-Bo and got most of my early camping exposure.

Manford would come once a week and mow the church lawn, and I often (grudgingly) helped him. He'd do the big parts, and I would do the edging.

One of the funny things he did was at picnics or dinner parties: after the food went around the table once, he'd pick up a dish and pass it again. Sometimes it would take awhile for everyone to catch on.

Manford set up a huge model train scene in his attic. I always think about Manford whenever I see a book about trains or look at the Railroad Museum across the street from where I work.

Manford is survived by his wife (my Pseudo-grandmother) Helen, numerous children, (real) grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The Taco Lobos, Week 17: 7-10

The season mercifully ended over a week ago, but I have waited until now to post the results. Why? Because... um.. because.

The season ended on a up note for the ol' Taco Lobos: a 3-game winning streak. Through the first nine games, the Taco Lobos were 1-8. Over the last 8, 6-2. Maybe the momentum will continue through next season? (Yes, I know what you're thinking... I'm not holding my breath, either.)

The final standings:

Check that out. I was the worst (or tied for worst) until week 15, and I finished 7th out of 10. Dig it.

Note the winner: Daniel Foster and the Moetown Duffmen. Congrats, Dan!

Here's Dan reveling in Fantasy glory:

Player Update for Team Logos

BELLINGHAM, WA – Star Coding Back and seven-year veteran James Van Noord was suddenly downgraded from Probable to Out and will be deactivated for Logos Research Systems, Inc’s Tuesday business day.

The announcement was made early Tuesday before game time by Logos’ team coach and owner Bob Pritchett. “James is a little under the weather, again. He should be back playing with the team tomorrow.”

James Van Noord, ironically nicknamed The Bottleneck, has been hampered recently by headaches and gastro-intestinal distress, partially caused by strange sleeping patterns and Hickory Farms holiday sampler processed cheese food.

The Taco Lobos, Week 13: 4-9

Can you say TWO WEEK WIN STREAK!

I can. The coolest part: it applies to me!

Last week was pretty stinkin' cool: the Taco Lobos beat the best team in the league, The Overisel Flying Odonata. Special standout for the Taco Lobos: Bret Favre.

Second verse, same as the first; except this time the Taco Lobos beat the second best team in the league, the Ingham County Kerux. Special standout this week: Julius Jones of the Dallas Cowboys (special shout out to the Colonel for urging my picking him up this week).

Two weeks versus the top two teams, and I get two wins (and each time, my opponent was the second worst scorer for the week). Geez... I sure coulda used a few of those wins at the beginning of the season...

The Tabo Lobos, Week 11: 2-9

I win one, I lose won. The win was against the (now) worst team in the league; the loss last week was against the Moetown Duffmen, who scored the highest points in the league. I scored the second fewest points in week 11 and was outscored by 102 points.

Yeah, not much info. Not much excitement, either. Being out of it this early in the season'll do that do you.

See related Dilbert.
